Definition

A set of dance music, usually three to five songs, of the same dance in similar style, if not by the same orquesta. The tandas are separated by a brief interlude of non tango music called a cortina, during which couples select each other. It is customary to dance the entire tanda with the same partner unless the man is rude or very disappointing as a dance partner, in which case the lady may say gracias (thank you) and leave.

The songs in the tandas are traditionally by the same orchestra from the same period. For instance you don't generally hear Pugliese from the 40's mixed with Pugliese of the 50's. As the tanda progresses it gives you and your partner a chance to warm up to the music and really explore it together without having to constantly get used to something new. Tandas also help us identify the sounds of different orchestras. If we can distinguish between them then we can dance to Calo differently than we do to D'Arienzo (Robin Thomas)

In Buenos Aires, if someone does not complete the tanda with the same person it is considered an insult.
